『Queen The Greatest』Queen: 1975年のライヴ - オデオン座の夜 (エピソード8)👑

in which we celebrate some of the outstanding
songs, performances and achievements that
Queen have delighted us with
over the last 50 years.
When we look back at 1975,
we can see that the band certainly
enjoyed an extraordinary year.
However, as the year was drawing to a close,
there was still one more milestone event to come
– A Night At The Odeon.
Like the Rainbow the year before,
the Hammersmith Odeon was a prestigious venue
the band were eager to claim as their own.
Having experienced it as the support act
for Mott The Hoople in 1973,

[0:50 - 1:35] Queen made a triumphant return with
four nights in late November early December.
Brian May “The big difference on that tour,
from the previous one,
was that we had this
beginnings of some TV reinforcement,
because TV makes all the difference,
it’s TV which makes you stopped in the street,
it makes people feel like they know you.”
Roger Taylor “We felt unfashionable,
but we had the strength of mind to realise
that unfashionable wasn’t necessarily a bad thing,
because I think if, you know, you could see people
liking our music, I mean, a lot of people.”
Such was the band’s growing popularity,
the BBC approached Queen to

[1:35 - 2:14] request they perform live on Christmas Eve
on BBC TV and Radio simultaneously.
This opportunity to reach an audience
of millions was not to be missed,
and so an extra night back at the Odeon
was added to the end of the tour.
As this rare audio from the sound check proves,
the band was in top form, and they worked hard to
make sure this wouldn’t be a night to
forget for their fans.
Freddie Mercury “One, one, two, one two.
John, we can do a soundcheck
for you now if you want,
the cameras are having a rest.”
Freddie Mercury “Do you want anything particular?
Have you done the Ukulele?”

Shall we do Now I’m Here?”
Brian May “Yeah…so it’s working”
But despite all the preparations,
there were some things beyond their control
that meant the band weren’t taking it for granted
that it was something they’d be able to pull off.
Roger Taylor “So it was quite difficult.
You’re just starting to wind down and then actually
then you’ve got to go back and do this one,
all important show.
It was a big deal in the fact that it was
going out live on Christmas Eve,
obviously there’d be a really good audience.
I remember thinking ‘ah –
will we have lost our momentum

[3:09 - 3:42] and that sort of kick-ass stuff that
you’ve developed on a tour,
and I do remember being quite,
sort of, worried about it.”
Roger Taylor “And I had a kind of flu at the time,
and I remember feeling like absolute death.
But the power of adrenaline is amazing,
as you start to sweat and work a bit and
and you kind of forget about it then.”
The show was flawless,
and that Night at the Odeon is regarded
as one of Queen’s best performances –
treasured because it also represents
the first filmed live performance
of Bohemian Rhapsody.
And as you can see from this moment in the concert –

[3:42 - 4:09] being able to end such an eventful and
significant year on such a high,
meant the world to the band.
Brian May “It’s been really like a party here tonight.
Thanks a lot for making it really something for us.
It’s felt a lot different.
You know we’ve taken our show around the world,
but we’ve never got to so many people all at once,
and this felt really good.
Thanks a lot for giving us a good year,
we’d like to leave you in the Lap of The Gods.”

「そのツアーで前回と大きく違ったのは、テレビの後押しが少しずつ始まっていたことだね。テレビは本当に大きな違いを生む。テレビに出ると、街で呼び止められるようになるし、人々が自分たちのことを知っていると感じてくれるんだ。」

ロジャー・テイラー
「自分たちは流行から外れていると感じていた。でも、それが必ずしも悪いことではないと理解する強さはあった。だって、実際に多くの人が僕らの音楽を好きでいてくれているのが分かっていたからね。」

バンドの人気が高まる中、BBCはクイーンに、クリスマス・イヴにBBCテレビとラジオで同時生放送のライブを行ってほしいと依頼しました。

何百万人もの視聴者に届くこの機会を逃すわけにはいかず、ツアー最終日にオデオンでの追加公演が組まれました。

この貴重なサウンドチェック音源が示す通り、バンドは絶好調で、ファンにとって忘れられない夜にするため懸命に準備していました。

「ワン、ワン、トゥー、ワン・トゥー。
ジョン、やりたければ今サウンドチェックできるよ。カメラは今休憩中だ。」

フレディ・マーキュリー
「何か特別にやりたい？ウクレレはもうやった？」

「じゃあ……“Now I’m Here”やろうか？」

ブライアン・メイ
「うん……ちゃんと動いてるね。」

しかし万全の準備にもかかわらず、バンドには自分たちの力ではどうにもならない不安もあり、決して成功を当然のものとは考えていませんでした。

ロジャー・テイラー
「けっこう大変だったよ。いったんツアーが終わりかけて気持ちが落ち着き始めたところで、また戻ってきてこの重要なショーをやらなきゃならなかったんだから。クリスマス・イヴに生放送されるという点でも大きな意味があったし、当然観客も素晴らしいはずだった。ツアーで培ってきた勢いや“キレ”を失っていないか、正直ちょっと心配だったのを覚えている。」

「しかもそのとき軽いインフルエンザみたいな状態で、本当に最悪の気分だった。でもアドレナリンの力はすごいよ。汗をかいて体を動かし始めると、いつの間にか忘れてしまうんだ。」

ショーは完璧でした。
そして「A Night At The Odeon」はクイーン屈指のパフォーマンスのひとつとして評価されています。なぜならそれは、「ボヘミアン・ラプソディ」の初の映像付きライブ演奏を収めた公演でもあるからです。

このコンサートの一場面からも分かるように、これほど出来事の多かった重要な一年を、最高の形で締めくくることができたことは、バンドにとって何よりの喜びでした。

ブライアン・メイ
「今夜は本当にパーティーみたいだったよ。僕らにとって特別な夜にしてくれてありがとう。これまで世界中を回ってきたけれど、これほど一度に多くの人に届けたことはなかった。今夜は本当に最高だった。素晴らしい一年をありがとう。最後は“神々の業（In the Lap of the Gods）”で締めくくりたいと思います。」
