『Queen The Greatest』 Queen: ターニング・ポイント - Killer Queen (エピソード3) 👑

[0:19 - 1:11] Welcome back to “Queen – The Greatest”
– a celebration of 50 of the greatest songs,
performances and achievements
from the Queen story so far.
In this film we celebrate one of
Queen’s best loved songs,
a track that was a major turning point for the band –
Killer Queen.
Following the success in the UK charts
with Seven Seas of Rhye in March 1974,
the band were eager to
go even better with their next single,
and had high hopes for the
Freddie Mercury composition, Killer Queen.
However, the song had been recorded
in unusual circumstances.

[1:11 - 1:56] Having only just recovered from Hepatitis,
a still clearly unwell Brian May
was struggling in the studio.
A duodenal ulcer was the diagnosis
and he was rushed to hospital,
leaving the rest of the band to carry on without him.
When he was able to return,
the song was already starting to sound unique –
and by the time Brian’s guitars
and Queen’s now distinctive vocal harmonies were added,
something truly special had evolved.
Despite the band’s confidence in the song,
they recognised releasing it
wouldn’t be without its risks…
[Brian May] “I do remember having
a slight reservation about Killer Queen.

[1:56 - 2:56] I remember thinking,
‘are we kind of selling ourselves as something
which has become very light’”.
“But every slice through that record is a perfect vision.
There’s lots of little things that visit once only,
like the little bell of the cymbal.”
As this rare footage from Swedish TV reveals,
record promoter Eric Hall made sure
the single got to all the radio stations,
and the song raced into the UK Top Ten,
peaking at number 2,
while also reaching number 12 in the USA.
Its success introduced the band
to a whole new wave of fans, and to this day
remains one of their most recognised
and well loved compositions.

[2:56 - 3:48] [Roger Taylor] “Killer Queen always felt a bit special,
it was very sophisticated.
And it was very Freddie.”
[Freddie Mercury] “As the albums have progressed,
I mean our sort of song writing has progressed
and we’ve sort of ventured into sort of different areas.”
“I like writing different songs, you know.
We don’t like to sort of repeat the same formula.”
[Roger Taylor] “It had a slightly sort of Noel Cowerd,
you know, that kind of element in it.”
Killer Queen would go on to be a significant influence
on the “We Will Rock You” Musical –
providing the name for the Bohemian’s evil nemesis,
played here in the original London cast
by the incomparable Sharon D Clarke.
And then in 2018, 44 years after its initial release,

[3:48 - 3:56] it was introduced to yet another generation of fans
when covered by Five Seconds of Summer to
mark the release of the ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ movie.

今回の映像では、クイーンの最も愛されている楽曲のひとつ、そしてバンドにとって大きな転機となった曲――「Killer Queen」を取り上げます。
1974年3月、「Seven Seas of Rhye」がUKチャートで成功を収めた後、
バンドは次のシングルでさらに大きな成功を狙っていました。
そしてフレディ・マーキュリー作曲の「Killer Queen」に大きな期待を寄せていたのです。

肝炎からようやく回復したばかりだったものの、
まだ明らかに体調が万全ではなかったブライアン・メイは、
スタジオで苦しんでいました。
診断は十二指腸潰瘍。
彼は緊急入院となり、残されたメンバーは彼抜きで作業を続けることになりました。
ブライアンがスタジオに戻れた頃には、
この曲はすでに独特の響きを帯び始めていました。
そこにブライアンのギター、
そしてクイーン特有のボーカル・ハーモニーが加わると、
本当に特別な作品へと進化していったのです。
バンドはこの曲に自信を持っていましたが、
リリースにはリスクも伴うと認識していました……。

「『Killer Queen』には少しだけ不安もあったのを覚えているよ。
自分たちが、なんだかとても軽いものとして売り出されてしまうんじゃないか、とね。」

「でもあのレコードのあらゆる部分が完璧なビジョンなんだ。
一度しか登場しない小さな要素がたくさんあってね、
たとえばシンバルの小さなベルの音みたいに。」
このスウェーデンのテレビによる貴重な映像が示すように、
レコード・プロモーターのエリック・ホールは、
このシングルをすべてのラジオ局に届けるよう手配しました。
その結果、この曲はUKトップ10に急上昇し、最高2位を記録。
さらにアメリカでも12位に到達しました。
この成功により、バンドはまったく新しい世代のファンを獲得し、
今日に至るまで彼らの最も有名で愛され続けている楽曲のひとつとなっています。

「『Killer Queen』はいつも少し特別な感じがあった。
とても洗練されていたし、
すごく“フレディらしい”曲だった。」

「アルバムを重ねるごとに、
僕たちのソングライティングも進歩してきたし、
いろいろな分野に挑戦してきたんだ。」
「違うタイプの曲を書くのが好きなんだよ。
同じやり方を繰り返すのは好きじゃない。」

「少しノエル・カワード風の要素もあったよね、ああいう感じの。」
「Killer Queen」はその後、ミュージカル『We Will Rock You』にも大きな影響を与え、
“ボヘミアン”たちの邪悪な宿敵の名前として使用されました。
ここでは、オリジナル・ロンドン・キャストで比類なきシャロン・D・クラークがその役を演じています。
そして2018年、初リリースから44年後、
映画『ボヘミアン・ラプソディ』公開を記念して
ファイヴ・セカンズ・オブ・サマーによってカバーされ、
新たな世代のファンにも紹介されました。
