『Queen The Greatest』Queen: 1976年「Somebody To Love」 - フレディにとって最高の曲? (エピソード9)👑

とはいえ、沁みるなあ、「Somebody To Love」

[0:14 - 0:51] Welcome back to “Queen The Greatest”,
a journey through some of Queen’s
most extraordinary songs, performances
and achievements.
This week we celebrate what is undoubtedly
one of Queen’s greatest hits,
the gospel inspired masterpiece,
Somebody To Love.
Having set such a high bench mark with their
A Night At The Opera album,
fans were eager to see what Queen
would come up with next.
But as ever, the band refused to stand still
and were intent on trying new things,
and for Somebody To Love
Freddie found inspiration from

[0:51 - 1:23] one the world’s finest singers to
create this unique Queen moment.
(Freddie Mercury) “I mean we had
the same three people singing
on the big choir sections,
but I think it had a different kind of
technical approach, because I mean
there was this sort of Gospel way of singing
which, I think, is different to us.
And there’s me going on about Aretha Franklin,
sort of made them go a bit mad.
(Freddie Mercury) “I just wanted to
write something in that kind of thing,
I was sort of incensed by the gospel approach
that she had on her albums, the earlier albums,
although it might sound the same kind of approach on,

[1:23 - 1:59] say, the harmonies, it is very different
…in the studio because it’s like a different kind of
…a different range.”
(Brian May) “Freddie wanted to be Aretha Franklin,
you have to bear this in mind,
and that explains everything.
He loved Aretha.
And, this was his Gospel epic.
It kind of followed in the steps
of Bohemian Rhapsody in the sense that
we were building up these multiple vocal parts,
but this time we were being a Gospel choir,
instead of being an English choir.
(Brian May) “Freddie came in very well prepared
with a lot of vocal parts
and we just worked our way through it.

[1:59 - 2:38] Yes, there was a very good feeling.
I always remember thinking
‘yeah, this is going to be something great.’”
For many “Bohemian Rhapsody”
was the greatest song Freddie ever wrote,
but according to the man himself,
he didn’t necessarily agree…
(Freddie Mercury) “People will, obviously,
no matter how hard you try
will think in terms of your past hits.
That’s inevitable.
But I think it’s up to the group and the musicians
to really think in other terms.
For my point of view, I mean as far as
the writing side of it is concerned.”
(Freddie Mercury) “I really thought…

[2:38 - 3:44] I said, ‘Ok, Bohemian Rhapsody is a big hit,
but as far as my writing ability is concerned
I think I can write better anyway’.
And I just looked at it from that point of view.
I mean I went and wrote, for my estimation,
I think a song like Somebody To Love,
is in my estimation, a better sort of…
from the writing aspect…a better song.”
Frustratingly, Somebody To Love
just missed out on the top spot in the UK charts,
peaking at number 2.
But it quickly became a powerhouse on stage,
as witnessed by this performance
at the Milton Keynes Bowl in 1982.
Ten years later,
at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert,

[3:44 - 4:30] the song had its place firmly cemented in Queen history
thanks to this unforgettable performance by
Brian, Roger, John, the London Gospel Choir
and, of course, George Michael.
The songs subsequent inclusion
on the Five Live EP release
saw it finally top the UK charts in 1993.
A truly greatest hit.

アルバム『A Night At The Opera』で非常に高い基準を打ち立てた後だけに、
ファンは次にクイーンが何を生み出すのかを心待ちにしていました。

しかしいつものように、バンドは現状にとどまることを拒み、新たな挑戦に意欲的でした。
そして「Somebody To Love」において、フレディは世界最高峰のシンガーの一人から着想を得て、この唯一無二のクイーンの名場面を作り上げたのです。

「大きなコーラス部分では同じ3人で歌っていたけれど、技術的なアプローチはまったく違っていたと思う。いわゆるゴスペル的な歌い方があって、それは僕らのやり方とは違うんだ。僕がアレサ・フランクリンの話ばかりするから、みんな少しうんざりしていたかもしれないけどね。」

「彼女の初期のアルバムにあるゴスペル的アプローチに強く刺激を受けて、ああいう雰囲気の曲を書きたかったんだ。ハーモニーの点では似ているように聴こえるかもしれないけれど、スタジオでやってみるとまったく違う。声域も違う種類のものだからね。」

ブライアン・メイ
「フレディはアレサ・フランクリンになりたかったんだ。それを念頭に置けば、すべて説明がつく。彼は彼女を心から愛していた。これは彼にとっての“ゴスペル叙事詩”だった。

『Bohemian Rhapsody』の流れをくむ部分もあって、今回も多重ボーカルを積み重ねていった。ただし今回はイギリス風の合唱団ではなく、ゴスペル・クワイアになろうとしたんだ。

フレディはたくさんのボーカル・パートを完璧に準備してスタジオに入ってきて、僕らはそれを一つ一つ形にしていった。とても良い感触があったよ。“これはきっと素晴らしいものになる”と感じていたのを覚えている。」

多くの人にとって「Bohemian Rhapsody」はフレディ最高の作品ですが、本人は必ずしもそうは思っていませんでした。

「どれだけ頑張っても、人はどうしても過去のヒット曲と比べて考えるものだ。それは避けられない。でも、グループやミュージシャン自身は、別の視点で考えるべきだと思う。少なくとも作曲という面に関してはね。」

「“Bohemian Rhapsody”は大ヒットだった。でも作曲能力という観点から言えば、もっと良い曲が書けると思ったんだ。そういう視点で考えた。そして僕なりの評価では、“Somebody To Love”の方が、作曲面ではより優れた曲だと思っている。」

残念ながら「Somebody To Love」はイギリスのチャートで最高2位となり、1位にはあと一歩届きませんでした。

しかしステージではすぐに圧倒的な存在感を放つ曲となり、1982年のミルトン・キーンズ・ボウルでのパフォーマンスがその証です。

そして10年後、フレディ・マーキュリー追悼コンサートでは、
ブライアン、ロジャー、ジョン、ロンドン・ゴスペル・クワイア、そしてジョージ・マイケルによる忘れがたい演奏によって、この曲はクイーンの歴史の中で確固たる地位を築きました。

その後「Five Live EP」に収録されたことで、1993年についにイギリス・チャートで1位を獲得します。

まさに“グレイテスト・ヒット”と呼ぶにふさわしい一曲です。
