『Queen The Greatest』Queen: 1976年ライヴ・イン・ハイド・パーク - Picnic by The Serpentine (エピソード10)👑

なんてファン思いの素晴らしいグループなんでしょう。

4人の人柄もほんとにいいですよね。

Welcome back.
You are watching “Queen The Greatest”,
a weekly celebration of some
of Queen’s most memorable songs,
performances and achievements.
This week we head back to 1976
and what remains to this day one of
the biggest nights in Queen’s remarkable career.
Humbled by the success they had enjoyed so far,
the band wanted to do something special to
say ‘thank you’ to their loyal fans –
and what better way than to
put on their most spectacular show to date.

[0:50 - 1:32] A free concert in the heart of London
- Hyde Park.
As Brian explains in this interview from the time,
it proved to be a massive undertaking…
(Brian May) “It took a lot of people about 8 or 9 weeks solid work,
including us, and all the traumas from not being able to
get permission to do it to
wondering about whether the grass was OK,
remember there was a drought at that time,
and they didn’t want us to play if it didn’t rain,
which is kind of an unusual thing.
(Brian May) And nobody realising how long it took to do,
to prepare for a thing like that.
You can’t just put it on or off in a day.
Lots of things like that,
right up to the last moment getting very,

[1:32 - 2:15] incredibly, naturally kind of high before going on
because although we’d played to large audiences before,
this is London, it’s our home
and that’s something different”.
Despite all the obstacles,
the show went ahead,
and as this footage from a rare BBC News clip shows,
it was a major event.
(News Reader) “More than 50,000 people flocked to
the free concert which was remarkably peaceful with
only four arrests over a period of nine hours.
The Police presence was kept to
a minimum, with only 40 officers visible,
though at least twice as many out of sight in reserve”.
(News Reader) “The star band went on at dusk, Queen.
Queen spent fifty thousand pounds of their own money

[2:15 - 2:59] to promote the concert.
It may be only rock ‘n’ roll,
but it is expensive”.
In fact, the crowd size was estimated to
be somewhere between 150 and 200,000 people,
and for 80 minutes Queen rocked London.
However, as the band prepared to
give the ecstatic crowd an encore to
finish the night, the police stepped in…
(Brian May) “Afterwards, being threatened with arrest
if we went on for the encore,
which nobody realised at the time,
but we were sort of hustled into a van
on threat of being taken away to different places.
It was very strange.
Because I think people got nervous of the crowd,

[2:59 - 3:42] and people worried whether it could be
controlled in the dark and things like that.
Apart from things like that it was great.
(Bob Harris) “You were pleased with it on the day?”
(Brian May) “I was very pleased, yeah.”
A night like this needed to be preserved,
and so the concert was filmed,
with footage from it immediately used
in a promotional video for “Somebody To Love”.
Looking back at it more recently,
Brian recalls what a big step the Hyde Park show was for Queen,
and the significance that night had for the band.
(Brian May) “I remember thinking…
gulp…you know,
we’ve carved out a place around the world,
but England doesn’t really think we’re that cool.

[3:45 - 4:38] It was packed beyond belief,
and it was really like coming home
to a sort of heroes welcome.”
(Brian May) “It was a thrilling experience to
actually have that kind of contact
with an audience in your own home town”.
Nearly 30 years later, in 2005,
Brian and Roger would make an emotional return
to Hyde Park with Paul Rodgers.
Originally scheduled for the 8th of July,
the show was delayed due to
a terrorist attack in the city.
However, a week later,
undeterred, everyone came together
for another memorable night,
with this poignant moment a particular highlight…

今週は1976年にさかのぼり、
今日に至るまでクイーンの輝かしいキャリアの中でも最大級の一夜として語り継がれている出来事を取り上げます。

これまでの成功に感謝しつつ、バンドは忠実なファンに「ありがとう」を伝える特別なことをしたいと考えました。
そしてそれには、当時としては最大規模となる壮大なショーを開催するのが最良の方法でした。

ロンドン中心部、ハイド・パークでの無料コンサートです。

当時のインタビューでブライアンが語っているように、それは非常に大規模な企画でした。

（ブライアン・メイ）
「僕たちも含めて大勢の人が8〜9週間、ずっと準備に取り組んだ。開催許可がなかなか下りなかったり、芝生の状態を心配したりと、本当にいろいろ大変だった。当時は干ばつでね、雨が降らないなら演奏させないと言われたんだ。ちょっと変わった話だけどね。

ああいうイベントの準備にどれだけ時間がかかるか、誰も分かっていなかった。1日で“やる”“やめる”と決められるものじゃないんだ。

本番直前までいろいろあって、ステージに上がる前は自然とものすごくハイになっていた。大観衆の前で演奏したことはあったけれど、ここはロンドン、僕たちのホームなんだ。それはまた別格だった。」

数々の障害を乗り越え、ショーは決行されました。
この貴重なBBCニュース映像が示すように、それは一大イベントとなりました。

（ニュースキャスター）
「5万人以上がこの無料コンサートに詰めかけましたが、9時間にわたって逮捕者はわずか4人という、非常に平穏なイベントでした。警察の姿は最小限に抑えられ、表に出ていたのは40人のみ。しかしその倍以上が待機していました。」

「スター・バンド、クイーンが夕暮れ時に登場しました。クイーンはこのコンサートの宣伝のために自費で5万ポンドを費やしました。ロックンロールかもしれませんが、費用はかかるのです。」

実際には、観客数は15万から20万人と推定され、
80分間にわたりクイーンはロンドンを揺らしました。

しかし、興奮した観衆にアンコールを披露しようとしたその時、警察が介入します。

「アンコールをやったら逮捕すると脅されたんだ。当時は誰も知らなかったけれど、僕たちは別々の場所に連れて行かれるぞと脅されながら、急いでバンに押し込まれた。とても奇妙だったよ。

暗くなってから群衆を制御できるのかと不安に思う人がいたんだろう。それ以外は本当に素晴らしかった。」

「当日は満足していましたか？」

「とても満足していたよ。」

この特別な夜は記録されるべきものであり、コンサートは撮影されました。
その映像はすぐに「Somebody To Love」のプロモーションビデオにも使用されました。

近年振り返って、ブライアンはこのハイド・パーク公演がクイーンにとってどれほど大きな飛躍だったか、そしてその夜が持つ意味を語っています。

「思ったんだ……ごくりとね。世界中で居場所を築いてきたけれど、イギリスではそれほどクールだとは思われていないんじゃないかって。

でも信じられないほどの満員で、まるで英雄として故郷に迎えられたようだった。」

「自分の地元で、あれほどの観客と触れ合えたのは、本当に胸が高鳴る体験だった。」

約30年後の2005年、
ブライアンとロジャーはポール・ロジャースと共に感慨深くハイド・パークへ戻ります。

当初7月8日に予定されていましたが、市内でのテロ攻撃により公演は延期されました。

しかし1週間後、誰一人ひるむことなく再び集まり、
もうひとつの忘れられない夜が生まれました。

その中でも、特に心に残る瞬間がこちらです……
